Avalere Health is seeking an experienced data scientist to join our growing Health Economics & Advanced Analytics (HEAA) Practice. The HEAA practice consists of staff with specialized experience in solving analytic and business challenges for healthcare stakeholders (e.g., biopharmaceutical companies, health plans, health systems, medical societies, etc.) using internal and external large scale, real-world datasets. In addition to data scientists, our team is comprised of health economists, health service researchers, evidence strategists, and project managers. We work closely with other functional areas within Avalere and Inovalon, applying the full scope of the firm’s knowledge base to the development of multi-disciplinary, creative solutions on behalf of our clients. We are seeking a Principal Research Scientist to lead the conceptualization, execution, and delivery of analyses in health economics, comparative effectiveness, performance measure development and testing, outcomes research, predictive analytics, and epidemiology, as well as qualitative and strategy-based work products for clients.


  • Interface with clients to design health economics and outcomes research studies, protocols and methods, economic models, predictive and advanced analytics, observational research, reports, and publications
  • Lead the direction and conceptualization of proposals, statements of work, budgets, and statistical analysis plans
  • Design and perform descriptive and advanced statistical analysis using large patient and/or claims databases in support of predictive modeling and health outcomes research
  • Develop and author study reports, scientific publications, conference abstracts and posters
  • Independently manage workflow and make direct contributions to the research process
  • Work with the HEAA leadership team to identify areas for delivering innovation to clients
  • Supervise a staff of programmers and/or data scientists as needed
  • Lend deep subject matter expertise and technical skills to healthcare analytics engagements spanning health economics and outcomes research, policy, predictive analytics and machine learning, epidemiology, and market analytics
  • All candidates to comply with all security policies/procedures


Minimum Requirements:

  • MA/MS or PhD in economics, health economics, data science, health policy, health services research, pharmacy administration, pharmacoeconomics, public health, epidemiology, statistics or related discipline
  • 10+ years consulting, healthcare, pharmaceutical/device industry, or health insurance industry experience
  • Broad technical knowledge of health economics, outcomes research, machine learning, and predictive analytic designs
  • Proficiency in design and execution of economic modeling studies, predictive analytics studies, and/or observational research using large administrative pharmacy and medical claims/EMR, public and private databases
  • 10+ years experience using statistical software packages such as SAS or STATA
  • 3+ years of SQL programming experience
  • R and/or Python programming experience preferred
  • Advanced knowledge of advanced statistical techniques and/or econometric skills
  • Experience presenting research at scientific conferences and/or a record of peer-reviewed publications
  • Experience leading teams of programmers or data scientists

Additional Skills and Competencies:

  • Healthcare background preferred
  • Client/customer facing experience strongly preferred
  • Excellent writing, project management, communication, and presentation skills
  • Ability to independently manage multiple work streams with limited supervision
  • Demonstrated problem solving, analytical reasoning and decision-making skills and strong commitment to meeting goals and deadlines
  • Positive, flexible and self-motivated attitude, with excellent teamwork skills and ability to work in a multi-disciplinary environment
